You are back on ScoutMe’s track and field, known simply as The Fast Track with the @HempsteadHuddle. The Fast Track is a high-level NCAA track and field blog for high school athletes. Think of this blog as an extension of your future NCAA track coach, while you’re in the offseason. The Fast Track’s first volume was all about speed training, while the second week was all about training for college track and field events like the 100-meter dash, the long jump, and the 400-meter hurdles. In week three, The Fast Track went back to the fundamentals that most coaches in high school look over, but every NCAA track coach stresses. This is the second week of examining the ins and outs of the best colleges for track and field; Last week we looked at Texas A&M and St. Augustine’s, but this time we’ll look into Division III and NAIA colleges for track and field. Here are the best colleges for track and field and what their programs have to offer.

The Best Colleges for Track and Field Division III: North Central College

North Central College is one of the best colleges for track and field in the nation. The Cardinals have captured the two straight indoor and outdoor track and field national championships. Their track and field legacy may not be vast in tenure, but like their coach Frank Gramarosso, this track and field program brings quality in exchange for quantity of years dominating the scene. Gramarosso was named the head coach of the Cardinals’ track and field program in August of 2010 after nearly 30 years on the Cardinals’ staff. He is also the associate head coach of the cross-country program and the coach of North Central’s sprinters and relay teams. Gramarosso is also known as Professor Frank because he teaches health and physical education part time.

As a track and field college athlete, Coach Frank was accomplished in his own right. As an upperclassman, Gramarosso co-captained the Northwestern University cross country and track and field teams in 1974-75 and was an All-Big 10 performer in the steeplechase. Academically, Gramarosso also earned both bachelors and masters degrees in health and physical education. He joined the North Central staff in 1983, after he led the first team he coach at Eisenhower High School to a runner-up finish at the Illinois High School Association Class AA State Meet, in 1981. In 1998, Gramarosso was inducted into the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Hall of Fame. The Best Colleges for Track and Field NAIA: Shorter University

Shorter University is also one of the best colleges for track and field in the nation. The Hawks are a track and field national powerhouse, which is also led by a coach who doesn’t have a long tenured career with the squad. It has only taken four seasons at Shorter University for head track and field coach Scott Byrd to capture the 2011 NAIA Indoor and Outdoor national track and field championships. Shorter’s track and field athletes have won 14 individual national championships and in 2011, had nine individual track and field national championships, alone. If you are interested in becoming a track and field athlete at Shorter, fill out this questionnaire.
