Gridiron Grit Vol. 2: don’t compromise your size

When it comes to college football, size matters. This was a fun fact that I learned my first away game in Wisconsin.  In high school, I was by far the biggest guy on the field. Most offensive lines were on average less than 250 pounds. Every line I ran across in college had guys no smaller than me, and I tipped the scales at a little under 300 pounds. Unfortunately, I was not diligent about keeping up with the diet I had started at the end of my senior year. Some great foods that you can eat will help you to gain weight properly. Here are some of the foods that you should eat that’ll get you to your desired mass.

 

Complex carbohydrates

The first series of foods are called complex carbohydrates. These foods include things we eat all the time like bagels and pasta. Bagels are a great way to put on proper weight. Breads in general are a great source of complex carbohydrates, especially when your body needs energy. Bagels are very dense in general; for instance, a typical slice of bread is about 70 calories, while one small three-inch bagel can pack over 150 calories.

Pasta on the other hand is another high energy source.  It you’re going to eat pasta be sure to measure your serving size, due to the fact that just one cup of spaghetti noodles is about 220 calories. The best topping for pasta is marinara sauce which is rich in lycopene, a natural antioxidant. It is best that you combine your complex carbohydrates with lean meats like ground turkey and chicken breast.

The  best complex carbohydrate is oatmeal. Oatmeal is a high fiber, whole grain non-soluble meal, that when combined with fruit and all-natural sweeteners like honey or raw sugar, is great for healthy weight gain.

 

Dried fruit

Dried fruit comes in many varieties including bananas, apricots, prunes, and the most popular of them all, raisins. Dried fruits are a quick and efficient calorie booster and are easily stored in ant type of container. When most people don’t know is how high in calories most dried fruits are. One half cup of raisins has more calories than a full cup of grapes. Despite a loss in some nutritional value, dried fruits are still great snack options. They are way better for you than most potato chips, yet they satisfy most people’s desire for a sweet tooth fix.

 

Fruit juice

Growing up, most kids thought that natural fruit juice was found in high sugar drinks like Kool-Aid and soda. It would be wise for you to stay away from the aforementioned drink types. Instead, look for a drink like a V-8 splash, apple juice or a raw sugar, sweetened tea. Beware of drinks that are high in corn syrup and try to drink vegetable juice whenever you can.

These options are excellent ways for you to gain weight properly. Continue to run and lift, so that you will increase your lean muscle mass and not store these calories as fat. The guys at the next level aren’t taking any prisoners. Prepare yourself, and you will dominate.
